Refurbishing an Entry Way

Refurbishing an Entry Way

What in the world the architect / builder was thinking?

You are looking at a condo unit in Scottsdale.

This is the main entry door to a two story home and another dummy door above it for decoration.

The home owners asked me to change the door, remove the dummy and stucco above the new door.

The new door was selected by the home owners from catalogs I presented at the free consultation I gave them at their home.
The door is a Simpson door, made of Douglas fir. The stain was chosen from samples I provided.

I removed the old door, jamb and trim. Removed the dummy door.
Installed the new door, jamb, trim and hardware.
Stucco above the door and painted the wall.

Every unit at this condominium complex was designed a little different.

  1. "dummy door for decoration"–I wonder who's idea was that?

  2. I don't know what they were thinking. Bizarre. The finished remodel looks wonderful. <3

  3. Oh, much better! I would not want to approach the first door. The second is welcoming and makes me want to touch it!

  4. So much better! Who does that…. a door on top of a door?

  5. It's obvious the architect was thinking BIG or then again, not thinking at all. Great transformation Dov!

  6. What a great difference that made!

  7. This looks SO MUCH BETTER! When I'm ready for a remodel, I may HAVE to have you do it, Dov Shapira.

  8. Wow what were they thinking, a dummy door? really. Looks much better.

  9. What a change! What was it about the 70's that they wanted the doors to appear 20 feet tall? Were they giants? We have a 20 ft entry gate on our Al Beadle town home and it is a pain! Great job, Shapira Builders!

  10. It did look a bit eccentric before, I imagine you had a very happy customer at the end of the job!

  11. Looks so much better! Great work!

  12. You made the condo much more appealing… that dummy door was terrible!

  13. Why in the world would you want a dummy door above the real one? It doesn't even look attractive. The "After" door makes a huge difference and looks great.

  14. Love the new door! The picture (side by side) make me think one was for people (the one on the right) and the other one was for the Great Dane!

    • I immediately thought of Alice in Wonderland!

  15. That old door just looks goofy. I wonder if the owner was eccentric and thought it was a good idea or the architect was a good salesman and convinced the builder it was a good idea.

Great job on the refurb! Simple, yet elegant, and the stucco remodel looks great.
