Installing a new door on existing old jamb
How to Install a new door on existing jamb

The new door is installed.

Installing a new door on existing jamb and changing the door swing.

My new client is a member of Angie’s List asked me on the phone If I can replace his back door with a new door.
He explained that the house id old and have an aluminum sidings. (Aluminum sidings makes it very difficult to remove the old door jamb without disturbing the siding.)
My client also asked me if I could change the door swing from outward swing to inward swing because he wanted to have a security door installed as well there.

When you have two doors hung on the same jamb, one has to open in and the other door out.
Old door is ready to be removed.

The old hollow core door.

When I arrived to his his he was in a process of remodeling his new home.

The old door was in a bad shape, a hollow core door with a window that can be open for air.

After I measured the opening few times and scratching my my head, I told him that can do this job without replacing the jamb or the trim.

My client chose a metal skin door with a fixed window on top. That style of a window is called ‘Light Fan’ or ‘Half wagon Wheel’
(A metal door can not be planed or cut down !! It has to fit as is.)

The job includes:
1. Removing the old door, hinges, thershold and wood door stops along the jamb.
2. clean the jamb from nails and caulking.
3. Rout new notches on the jamb and the door for hinges.
4. Install new wood door stops and weather stripping.
5. Hang the door and bore for a handset and a deadbolt.
6. Install new threshold and door bottom sweep.

I did this job on February 12th 2014.

It came out just perfect. I made my client a happy man.
Now it’s my client turn to paint the door and the jamb.
