Designing, building and installing a sleeping platform with two drawers.
My new client Kevin, found me on Angie’s List, He asked me to build a platform with two drawers so he and his wife could sleep in the SUV on the road.
We talked about it and he showed me some pictures he found on the Internet.
I told him it would be kinda short and I made a suggestion to build an extra piece to extend the platform.
He said, with extra piece I will not be able to shut the back door and a bear may get us.
I smiled (politely) .
I used two by six redwood, three quarters of an inch poplar wood and high quality plywood.
I also used full extension ball bearing drawer slides.
The drawers are twenty inches wide, thirty inches long and five inches deep. I installed dividers inside the drawers.
There is a second platform that is attached to the drawers unit, it can be remove and that will allow to keep the drawers unit in the car and to erect the back seats when they need to be used.
A special hardware I used to connect between the two units.
My client said, he will keep the drawers in the car until he is ready to sell it.
I laminated thin carpet on top with contact cement and painted some of the woodwork.

Oh We so needed this this summer!! My husband went away for 6 weeks on an internship. He lived in his van the entire time because everywhere wanted a 6 months rental agreement…not worth it with him only there for 6 weeks. This really could have been useful for him.

Nice job. The platform could be a bed, a storage spot or a great place for the kids/ dogs to be while camping.
We used to have an SUV, now we only have a Truck and a car… but, that platform would not only be great for sleeping. I could use those drawers to store all kinds of things.
