Refinishing an old wood gate

This old gate looked lifeless and my client asked me to give it life.

My client wanted this old ugly gate to look old and beautiful.

I used oil based stain and few coats of natural Tung oil.

Oil based stain penetrates theĀ porous and dry wood.

The grey dark spot are water damage from fungus.

The oil (petroleum) based stain, will kill any living organism, the Tung oil enhances the overall look, add some gloss and will prevent the rain water from penetrating into the wood.

How I wish I took a picture before my refinishing work. The gate was very pale.

My client loved the results as you see in the picture.

  5. I really like the stain and design of that gate. Great job Dov! I could never do this kind of top quality work.

  6. I wish you would have taken a pic before too. The outcome is amazing!

  7. Good reasons to hire a professional for a job like this. A homeowner would probably cause more damage than improving the look of the gate.

  8. Great tip with the oil based stain and it turned out beautiful!! Saving the old gate saves the character!

  9. wow love the look of that gate! Great work as always!

  10. Great post, I would have tried to sand off the Fungus. I had no idea the oil based stain would kill it. Thanks for sharing you definitely have saved me time in the future.
