Custom wall pocket for a pocket door.
Creating a wall pocket for a pocket door, using Johnson hardware.
Building a pocket takes some thinking and calculation
The space between the bottom of the and the finished floor had to be three quarter of an inch.
When the door is wide open it has to be flush with the jamb.
When door is shut, you want the door to hit the jamb evenly.
When the door is shut, part of the door (About one inch) is in the pocket so never see the end of the door back.
The back of the door gets a rubber bumper.
The carriage (wheels hardware) have a nut for adjustment, up and downward.
The wheels are mad of nylon, they run smoother, more quiet, last longer than plastic.
This series of hardware from Johnson can hold up to 450 pounds door.
I framed the pocket and hung one panel Shaker style door for my friend contractor Mr. Barrett.
I had to kerf the jamb for the corner bead. The drywall and the corner bead was done by a drywall contractor.
Kerf means, Having a groove along the jamb edge, one side of the corner bead gets tucked into the groove.
The idea is not to have moldings around the doors for a clean look, so to speak.
This style is very common in Phoenix where they try to imitate the adobe style of Mexican building.
Mr. Barrett chose square corner beading and not the round type.
Some times people call me and ask me if I sell pocket door,
I ask, do you need a pocket with hardware and a door?
The say, No, only the door.
For your information, once you have the pocked installed, any door would fit.
All you need to know the pocket width and the height, then you can order any door style.
No manufacturer makes doors just for wall pocket.

You actually educated me on this.. How much do pocket door cost nowadays?
That's a real space saving idea and appealing to the eye.
This is such a cool feature to have, especially in a small room. I would so love to retrofit all my doors into pocket doors. I love!
We have those in our bathroom! Thank you for showing how to design those. I never did know…quite interesting:)
I look at doors in a whole new different way since I've started reading your blog! Very good work!
A great work yet again from you Dov. You've done it expertly. Good job!

Thank you
I agree with you. Thank you
This is a good solution for saving room space.
Thanks for this cross-section of a pocket door. I have pocket doors at home and have been wondering the mechanics behind them in case they fall off their track
Looks very interesting! Definitely great job! Thanks for sharing!
I love having pocket doors! They don't obstruct traffic flow or take up wall space. I'm sure decorators appreciate the additional wall space.
You are a talented man Dov
In what situation is this a preferred solution, Dov?
It looks so "clean" that one cannot see anything that is hidden inside the wall.Very smart solution… no bottom track, just top hang!
